Soul Survivor #17 – STAX and the Memphis Sound

Stax had its heyday between 1962-68, finally closing its doors in 1972. In that time they helped define, if not create, the Memphis sound, or Memphis soul – which is a more raw, loose and gritty style than other labels like Motown. Artists such as Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T and the MGs all came out of Stax. This episode is a retrospective of some of their defining recordings.
